How is paint consumption calculated?

Start by calculating the area

Calculate the area of the surface to be painted in square metres. Use width × height for walls and width × depth for ceilings. You can deduct the area of doors and windows from the total.

Take the number of coats into account

The total requirement is found by multiplying the area to be painted by the number of coats. If two coats are planned, the area is multiplied by two. If a primer is to be applied, the primer requirement must be calculated separately.

Factors that affect consumption

• The absorbency of the surface (absorbent surfaces use more product)
• Surface roughness and texture
• Application method (brush, roller, spray)
• Change of colour and the opacity required
• The applicator's working technique

Theoretical and actual consumption

The consumption figures given in technical data sheets are theoretical values for a smooth, properly prepared surface. Actual consumption on site varies depending on the factors above. It is therefore worth allowing a margin before placing an order.
