What a primer does

A primer forms an intermediate layer between the paint and the surface. It evens out the absorbency of the surface, binds chalking substrates and supports the adhesion of the topcoat. When the right primer is used, the topcoat looks more uniform and lasts longer on the surface.

When is a primer needed?

On newly plastered and highly absorbent surfaces
On chalking or easily crumbling surfaces
On smooth, low absorbency surfaces such as fair faced concrete
On surfaces at risk of water stains, soot or colour bleed
On surfaces that look patchy because of separate repair areas

On exteriors before the topcoat: Siena Silicone Exterior Primer
On surfaces at risk of stain bleed: Siena Insulation Primer
On fair faced concrete and hard, low absorbency surfaces: Siena Raw Concrete Primer

Points to watch

A primer does not replace the topcoat; it prepares the way for it. Apply the primer in a thin, even film and do not let it pool. Make sure the primer is dry before moving on to the topcoat. For product specific waiting times, refer to the details on the product packaging.
